Alexa ranking is how much traffic the site is receiving.

 

You want a website with much traffic. Also search www.google.com to see how many pages are pointing to that domain. The more hits you get on the page name the more likely you are to still receive traffic.

 

Now you have to check what the domain was used for before and why it is receiving so much traffic. If it was some X-rated site with free pictures the traffic might not be what you are looking for.

 

Go to the Internet Archive and search to see what was on the domain earlier: www.archive.org

 

If you have found a good domain don’t overspend for it. Don’t pay more than $60 at an auction unless it is really massive amounts of quality traffic the domain is receiving. It is rarely worth the price paying more than $60 for a domain.

 

Now try to match a bit of the look and feel as well as the content from the old website that used to be on that domain. That way the people going there might not even notice that it has changed and you are now providing them with the information they were looking for. A win win deal.
